We had our third session with Indonesia on July 18th!
The session was entitled "BaTeak Time" and was held in the collaboration with the "Indonesian International Students Association in Japan Hiroshima Branch."
It was our great pleasure to collaborate with such an amazing group of bright Indonesian youth! :)
So, you might be wondering what "BaTeak Time" is?
"BaTeak Time" is a coined term made up of "Batik", a type of traditional Indonesian clothing, and "Tea Time".
BaTeak Time was launched by a group of Indonesian students currently studying in Japan that wish to create a place where Japanese people can learn Indonesian culture casually.
In the session, Japanese organizers wore Yukata, which is a type of traditional Japanese clothing, and Indonesian organizers wore Batik!
We learned that even though Batik is originally from Java Island, it has evolved in each region and now there are many distinct patterns across the country. Also, it was interesting to know that, in Indonesia, people wear Batik in their daily lives, which is not the case with Yukata in Japan.
In Japan, even though we very occasionally wear Kimono for example at summer festivals, fireworks and after enjoying hot springs, very few people wear it on daily basis.
Although there is a huge difference in the extent to which traditional costumes are preserved in the two countries, we also found some similarities, for example in that both costumes are influenced by the wave of modernization.
We also had a quick quiz session about the organizers of both teams. Hope you got to know more about the organizers that are conducting weekly sessions! :)
Our next session is going to be on August 1st from 8pm JST and it is going to be 90 mins long.
We are excited to continue learning more about the two countries including the existent social issues.
On August 1st, we will be talking about "tourism".
See you all soon!!! :)
